[#chanops] Welcome! Be kind, ask anything about running a channel.
@mira
New op? Start with #setup — it builds the exact commands for your channel.
@deniz
And bookmark the services guide and modes & extbans. They're written for Anope 2.0 and InspIRCd 4.
nightowl
can I hang out here even if I'm not an op yet?
@mira
Of course. Rooms worth knowing:
  • #chanopsThe operators' lounge. Ask questions, share tricks, get a second opinion on a tricky ban. kiwilounge
  • #helpNetwork help desk: connecting, nicknames, services, reports. kiwilounge
  • #loungeThe busiest room on LibraIRC — see good moderation in action. kiwilounge

#setup

Register and configure a channel with Anope ChanServ

@kaan
Type your channel name and topic. Every command below updates itself — copy them one at a time.
#

1
Register your nickname once (your own password, a real email):
/msg NickServ REGISTER yourpassword you@example.com
2
Join — the first person in an empty channel gets @:
/join #mychannel
3
Register the channel while you hold @ in it. You become its founder:
/msg ChanServ REGISTER #mychannel A friendly place to chat
4
Lock the basic modes so they can't be removed:
/msg ChanServ MODE #mychannel LOCK ADD +nt
5
Let ChanServ remember the topic when the channel empties:
/msg ChanServ SET #mychannel KEEPTOPIC ON
6
Set a welcoming topic:
/topic #mychannel Welcome to #mychannel! Be kind, no spam.
7
Give a trusted helper auto-op with the AOP list:
/msg ChanServ AOP #mychannel ADD helpernick
8
Check the result:
/msg ChanServ INFO #mychannel
@deniz
Never paste your NickServ password into a channel. If it happens, change it at once: /msg NickServ SET PASSWORD newpassword.

#access

@mira

sam_
how do I see what a level can do?
@mira
/msg ChanServ LEVELS #chan LIST. More in the services guide.

#modes

InspIRCd 4 channel modes

@deniz
The five modes every channel should know:
modewhat it does
+nNo messages from outside the channel.
+tOnly ops change the topic.
+ROnly logged-in users can join — your spam-wave shield.
+MOnly logged-in users can speak.
+fFlood control, e.g. +f mute:6:4
@deniz
Module modes depend on what the network loads. Full InspIRCd 4 list: modes & extbans.

#extbans

Named extended bans

@kaan
InspIRCd 4 extbans are written by name. Acting bans do something; matching bans choose who. They stack:
  • mute:actingCan stay and read, but can't speak.
  • account:matchingLogged in to a services account.
  • unauthed:matchingNot logged in to any account.
  • realname:matchingReal name (gecos) matches.
  • country:matchingTwo-letter country code matches.
  • gateway:matchingWebIRC gateway name matches.
/mode #chan +b mute:*!*@bad.host
/mode #chan +b account:spammer
/mode #chan +b mute:unauthed:*!*@*
@kaan
Prefix with ! to invert. The full list is on modes & extbans.

#moderation

Calm, consistent moderation

@mira
The ladder — climb only as far as you need:
  1. remind a friendly word
  2. mute +b mute:
  3. kick they can come back
  4. ban +b *!*@host
  5. akick enforced by ChanServ
retro_dev
what about a bot flood at 3am?
@mira
/mode #chan +R right away, then report it in #help so staff can act network-wide. Full playbook: moderation.
