#moderationCalm, consistent moderation

#ladder

The moderation ladder

@mira
Use the lightest tool that works. Quiet before kick, kick before ban, timed (BAN #chan +1d) before permanent.
  1. remind a friendly word
  2. mute +b mute:
  3. kick they can come back
  4. ban +b *!*@host
  5. akick enforced by ChanServ

#troll

Someone is trolling

  1. remind once, calmly
  2. mute: /mode #chan +b mute:*!*@host
  3. still going? /msg ChanServ BAN #chan +1d nick reason — a one-day ban
  4. don't argue — act, then move on

#spam

Spam / bot wave

  1. /mode #chan +R — only logged-in users can join
  2. optionally +M so only logged-in users can speak
  3. /mode #chan +b mute:unauthed:*!*@* quiets everyone not logged in
  4. report in #help so staff can act network-wide
  5. remove the modes once calm

#flood

Floods & repeats

  1. /mode #chan +f kickban:6:4 — 6 lines in 4s gets kickbanned
  2. /mode #chan +E mute:3:10 — repeating the same line gets muted
  3. /mode #chan +B block:10:70 — blocks messages that are 70% caps
  4. /mode #chan +J 30 — kicked users wait 30s to rejoin

#evasion

Ban evasion

  1. ban the account: /mode #chan +b account:name
  2. make it stick: /msg ChanServ AKICK #chan ADD *!*@host reason
  3. repeat evasion breaks network rules — report via the helpdesk

#takeover

Takeover

  1. /msg ChanServ ENFORCE #chan SECUREOPS removes ops from anyone without access
  2. /msg ChanServ ACCESS #chan LIST — review who has access
  3. turn on SET #chan SECUREOPS ON and SET #chan SECUREFOUNDER ON
  4. never share your NickServ password

#staff

When to call network staff

@deniz
Channel ops handle their channel. Network staff handle spam bots, clone floods, cross-channel evasion, threats and illegal content — ask in #help or open a ticket at the helpdesk with nicks and times.
